Now we will simplify the use of affect and effect as both noun and verb as given in the below tabular format.

When ‘affect’ is used as verb, it implies that the word is used to have an influence on; to impress or to move; to produce a change in something or someone

For Example:

His study was intended to show how alcohol affects the reaction time of medicine.

EFFECT

Effect is used as noun in a sentence when it shows any result or outcome from some specific activity.

For Example:

They discussed the effects of mediation on Corporate.

When Effect is used as a verb in a sentence it usually implies To produce a result. To cause something to occur; to bring about an outcome.

For Example:

Cutbacks were introduce to effect basic economics of the firm.

CONCLUSION

So be ready to make almost all verbs “affect.”

 And be ready to make virtually all nouns “effect.”

Also, if you are in India, finding a person who is working in E&TC is is not that difficult. Discuss with them about their typical day at work. Ask them why do they like their jobs? Control Engineering

How to answer a writing task 1of IELTS? Part 3

Welcome to career care’s IELTS tutorial for writing task 1. You can go back to part 1 and part 2 here.

This is a series of three posts. In this post we would be looking at how to write a body paragraph and conclusion for the task 1.

In the previous two posts we discussed about our essays structure, how to have 150 words in our essay and how to write introduction for the essay.

In today’s post we would looking at the body paragraph part of our essay

Let’s continue with the same example as of the earlier post

Writing task 1

This is the first section of your IELTS Academic Writing test. You should spend about 20 minutes on it.

Take a look at the graphics and complete the task below.

The graphs above give information about computer ownership as a percentage of the population between 2002 and 2010, and by level of education for the years 2002 and 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Now as per our strategy we have to write 6 – 7 sentences. So let’s start.

You should start by gathering information from the graph such as similar patterns or difference or some major change in the trends.

Write it down point wise. Let us do it for our example

  1. The first similarity is the steady but significant rise in the percentage of computer owner’s
  2. The second graph shows that there was 30% rise in the ownership of computer for no high school diploma level.
  3. And approximately 30% for high school diploma or an unfinished college education
  4. Also graduates and post graduate had the highest percentage of increase but through the decade it was only 20%.
  5. From the second we can conclude that higher the education higher is the level of computer ownership.

Now let’s build our body paragraph

It can be inferred from the given the data for level of education that higher levels of education higher is level of computer ownership in both of those years. In 2002, only around 15% of those who did not finish high school had a computer but this figure had increased to 30% by 2010. There were also considerable rise of approximately 30% in the ownership for those with a high school diploma or an unfinished college education (reaching 65% and 85% respectively in 2010). Even though graduates and postgraduates proved to have the greatest level of ownership in 2010, at 90% and 95% respectively, but the rise was only 20 percentage points higher than in 2002.

Few pointers:

  • This part of your essay should cover all the important trends, changes and similarities
  • Do NOT mention unnecessary details. Remember that this paragraph should have summary of the information given
  • You need to write about all the periods of time and all the subjects of graph. If it shows several years like in the above example (2002, 2010) – write about all of them, if it is about subjects like men and women – write about both.
  • To make your essay effect be concise and specific
  • Use strong verbs, group similar trends and avoid repetitions
  • Do NOT add extra details, nor try to suggest any reasons or give your opinion. Just analyze the data and give the facts in a neutral unbiased way.

After your body paragraph just add one conclusion sentence. Do NOT over write the conclusion. It should crisp and just one line.

Here is the conclusion for our example

The last decade has seen a substantial growth in computer ownership in general, and across all educational levels.

So our complete essay would be:

3 Questions for writing best objective on resume

An objective states your professional goal. It is crisp, clear and relevant statement that gives insights into which type of organization you would like to work with? How would you contribute? What would you gain during the process? Answers to even couple of questions among three would be sufficient to write a descent objective. Let’s split these questions to understand how to arrive at your objective statement.

Which type of organization you would like to work with?

Answer to this question should be drafted in simple words stating exactly in which kind of company you would like to work. Ajinkya has recently completed his C.A. and searching an assignment a Finance company. He might write “Seeking an assignment with Financial Enterprise”

How you would contribute?

While thinking about answer to this question, think of the kind of work you may like. If you are outgoing person you may like to work in capacity where a lot of customer interaction happens. If you are a number-cruncher you would be better off in a role that requires desk work. Decide for yourself. If you could come up with at least department in which you would like to work with, that’s good. Also, if you could come up with position in which you would like to start that would be even better.

What would be the result of association?

Think of what you and your future employer might gain from the association. Don’t overestimate your capabilities by claiming to bring a huge turnaround. You are about to discover many things in life after you start working in real job. Be down to earth. For about a year, it’s you who is going to gain something. Also, be sure that you can back your claims.

3 points to answer “Why do you want to work with us?”

We meet many people in our office, who blow their interviews by not preparing well for question, “Why do you want to work with us?” They also complain, “You know, I have sent about 50 copies of my resume still no results”. Jobseekers must understand that seeking jobs is not mere a number game. It is not about how many resumes you sent or how many interviews you attended. It is how well you prepared your resume and what was your strategy for interview. Our advise is, don’t just hope to get success by distributing resumes.

Imagine one fine morning you get a call, “Hello, Mr. Rajat. I am Deepa from ABC Company. I am responding to your resume submitted for post of Support Engineer. May I know why would you like to work with us?” Response to this question must be prompt and precise. If Rajat starts like, “Hmmm, well, I have applied to many companies and talked to many HRs, would you please elaborate in detail what were the responsibilities of the position?”, he has blown his chances. Hence you need planning. Before going to strategy to answer this question let’s look at why is this question asked at all?

Why this question?

Answer to the stated question explains many aspects of you and your planning to the interviewers. Most prominently it tells following:

  1. Your career goals and how this job fits into it
  2. Your seriousness for job and would you perform if hired?
  3. How much do you know about company, industry and position?

Strategy to answer this question

Before starting to strategize the answer, have a look at three things you future employers want to know. We can sum them up as, your future employer is looking for an individual, with serious plan for future, who is well aware of industry. So answer to this question should reflect said qualities about you.

Let’s simplify things for you. Just address each point in one to two sentences and you get your answer.

Explain in short what your goals are, may be for next three to five years. Explain that in order to achieve it, offered position can be a big milestone. This reflects you have a clear plan which is achievable and also if hired, you plan to stay at that position at least for next three to five years. This also shows that you are not a job hopper.

For addressing next point, you need to do a bit of research about the company, its background, products, markets and most importantly things in which company takes pride in. Companies pride is hidden in its tagline. For example, Coca-cola takes pride in spreading happiness. You must mention it and then also express you interest to do same.

  1. I have been working as Sales Engineer for about three years now and I have achieved all targets till date. I understand basic role and expectations of the position. I wish to move forward in my career by becoming Territory Manager where, I can use my experience to help Sales Engineer sell. This will help increase my share of contribution.   2. I have been working as Senior Engineer for couple of years, working on JAVA. Now, looking forward for about next four years, I wish to learn a leader’s skills and implement them successfully. I am sure I can perform at this position because I take initiatives; I am a good technical resource and an efficient team member. Your company is known for coding and I am proud of my contributions in establishing Standard Operating Procedures for our team, which improved our codes quality dramatically. How to choose your career?

Deciding career is one of the toughest jobs. Career counselling services help for sure but, there are few tips you can try home first. In this blog we are going to discuss about process that you can use to arrive at suitable career. In order to do that, students or parents need to ask few questions. Writing down answers with detailed explanation will help for sure.

In Indian context 10th and 12th standard exams are most important. Conventionally students make or break their careers at this juncture. Many are judged and labelled for lifetime based on results. It is not only exam of students but of their teachers, parents and siblings too. Exams would be over within two months from now, and question of lifetime would drop in, “What should I do now?” after the exams. Many parents guide their children towards conventional courses which parents are well informed about or they may suggest non-conventional courses based on success story they might have listened in their offices. Some students, rush towards their teachers, who no doubt have enormous subject knowledge, but may not been exposed to other fields.

What’s your dream?

Everybody has dream right from Martin Luther King to your Dudhwala. Given a chance everyone sees himself into a role. It can be anything: Engineer, Doctor, Police Inspector, Pharmacist, Marketing, Businessman, Defense person, Finance Guru, Teacher, Artist or Sportsperson. Write this dream down along with reasons, you have that dream. Reason can be “My father is an Engineer that’s why…” or “I think pilots have glamorous life-style and I want it too…” or “I always wanted to be a doctor because human body seems so simple and yet it is so complex”. Don’t judge your reasons. They will be really helpful in final analysis.

Have you checked your interest?

When was the last time you studied physics because you really liked it and not to crack a JEE question? Start listing down your interests. Your dreams and interests are different. Your dream is in future whereas your interest is in present. You enjoy pursuing your interests. List these interests too. They can be studying a subject thoroughly, talking to people what you read about, analysing things around you or observing people. You could also note down whether you like to work alone or in groups. This will help you narrow down not only courses but job types you may choose in future.

Based on answers to two questions, you will be able to judge your career vaguely. We are saying vaguely because there are few things you need to know about that career. Our suggestion is list two to three career options based on answers to these questions.

Are you informed?

Once you decide to go for a particular career, start collecting all relevant information. Relevant information most importantly consists of what are you going to do for next forty years of life. Getting through the course is one thing but pursuing the career for lifetime is altogether different. List down qualities, you will need to have for performing that job, over a sustained period of time. It can also give you an idea which qualities you should work on in case you decide to go for same career. For instance, you want to be a pilot, because you love glamorous lifestyle. In your interests you not down that you love airplanes and for your age your knowledge is surprisingly high. At the same time you note down that you like to work alone. Be alarmed. Pilot needs to work with people. There are people on ground and in air co-ordinating with him. Work on interpersonal skills.

Answers to these questions would clear your vision to great extent. Still there are few things to sort out.

What do you have currently?

After getting your career, likings and qualities required to pursue that career, it’s time for realistic check. Show the list to your parents, teachers, friends and people you think, can guide you. Most probably these people might have known you from many years. Discuss with them if a particular career is good for you. Consider getting your own SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis done. Go through your qualities and qualities required in that career, with their guidance. Match them. See what skills you need to learn. If the gap between two is too wide that’s when other two options we suggested previously come handy.

Also, research institutes which provide suitable courses; their curriculum and most importantly finances. By no means, we are suggesting that you should back out in case your financial condition is not good, we are suggesting you, to look for the options like loans and payoff periods after getting the job.

Are you well prepared for the entry?

Once you figure answers to aforementioned questions, start preparing for the exams. Most of you would be aware about your capabilities. Prepare a fool-proof plan accordingly. Discuss it with your advisors, parents and teachers. They can help you strategise for the entrance exams based on your strength and weaknesses.

In case, you are confused and haven’t got anything on your sheet, you should think of an option of career counselling. Career counsellor can help by giving you few tests and try to find out your interests, your skills. He can also guide about colleges, based on your interests, skills and financial conditions. Our suggestion, while choosing your Career Counsellor would be, to choose based on his experience in real life than his counselling experience alone. Counselling experience is always handy, but in times, when there are so many types of careers to choose from, real life experience counts more.

Assure, Ensure and Insure

Many people are not sure, if they should assure ensure insure other person. We are going to cover the difference between these three words today.

Assure

Assure originates from as + secure where as- is variant ad- meaning towards.

Used as verb

  1. To declare earnestly or positively to give confidence

“He assured her that everything would be alright.”

  1. To promise

“The airliner assured safe landing considering their recent history of landings.”

In short, assure is used to indicate confidence in actions or steps taken by the person. It is used to remove any doubts in people’s minds, involved in the activity.

Ensure

Ensure originates from en + sure where en- is a prefix meaning to cause to

Used as verb

  1. To secure or guarantee

“The letter from BCCI ensured that guilty players would face stern action.”

In short, ensure is used in order to guarantee a particular action will be taken. It is used to promise an activity that eventually will result in desired result.

Insure

Insure is a variant of ensure

Used as Verb

  1. To guarantee against harm or loss

“Thank God! Your car is insured.”

In short, insure is used to guarantee that even in case of unexpected results harm or loss will be compensated by its equivalent trade.
