Computer Engineering as career options

Computer Engineering as a career

Computer Engineering has become one of the core branches of Engineering in modern times, one of the most popular in India. It has seen more innovation than any other branches of Engineering. Careers in Computer Engineering can be very exciting considering ever increasing role of computers in our lives.

In India, you can be start working as Computer Engineer after B.E./B.Tech or BCA/MCA. In order to get into one of these courses you must have 10+2. In addition, in most of the colleges you must qualify Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). You may apply for direct second year admission in B.E. after completing Diploma in Computer Engineering.

How would I know, I am interested in Computer Engineering?

This is a question we ask our students to ponder upon first. For choosing any field, you must be interested in that field. You should not enter into a field, because of peer pressure or parent’s insistence. So, how would you know if you are interested in Computer Engineering?

Our advice would be to go visit an IT professional. If you are in India, finding a person who is working with an IT company is not that difficulty. Discuss with them about typical day of a Computer Engineer. Ask them why do they like their jobs? What skills they think are important in order to pursue career in this field? These discussions may give you insights into what you may have to do for about 35 years of your life. Are you ready?

In addition to visit to your future workplace taking psychometric test is best way to judge your career options. It will help you understand your skills, preferences and personality types. Methods like Mayer’s Bragg Testing are statistically proven and can be easily read. For counselling you may consider the counsellor with industry experience.

What is the scope?

IT sector in India has plenty of jobs for fresh computer science graduates. Candidates from top notch engineering colleges however get attractive job offers from MNC IT companies in comparison to not so known engineering colleges. According to recent survey, candidates with sound Field Knowledge and good communication skills do not face problem in getting a job, irrespective of their college. Computer engineers can get jobs in non-IT companies like universities, research, private and public industries, government departments, business organisations, commercial organisations and the manufacturing sector, etc.

In general, you may find jobs in following sectors of Computer Engineering:

Coding, cryptography, and information protection

Computer engineers work in Coding, Cryptography, and Information Protection to develop new methods for protecting various information, such as digital images and music, fragmentation, copyright infringement and other forms of tampering.

Communications and wireless networks

Those focusing on communications and wireless networks, work advancements in tele-communications systems and networks (especially wireless networks), modulation and error-control coding, and information theory.

Compilers and operating systems

This specialty focuses on compilers and operating systems design and development. Engineers in this field develop new operating system architecture, program analysis techniques, and new techniques to assure quality.

Computational science and engineering

According to the Sloan Career Cornerstone Center, individuals working in this area, “computational methods are applied to formulate and solve complex mathematical problems in engineering and the physical and the social sciences”. Examples include aircraft design using Computer aided Engineering

Computer networks, mobile computing, and distributed systems

In this specialty, engineers build integrated environments for computing, communications, and information

Computer systems: architecture, parallel processing, and dependability

Engineers working in computer systems work on research projects that allow for reliable, secure, and high-performance computer systems. Projects such as designing processors for multi-threading and parallel processing are included in this field.

Computer vision and robotics

In this specialty, computer engineers focus on developing visual sensing technology to sense an environment, representation of an environment, and manipulation of the environment.

Embedded systems

Individuals working in this area design technology for enhancing the speed, reliability, and performance of systems. Embedded systems are found in many devices from a small FM radio to the space shuttle.

Integrated circuits, VLSI design, testing and CAD

This specialty of computer engineering requires adequate knowledge of electronics and electrical systems. Engineers working in this area work on enhancing the speed, reliability, and energy efficiency of next-generation very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuits and microsystems.

Signal, image and speech processing

Computer engineers in this area develop improvements in human–computer interaction, including speech recognition and synthesis, medical and scientific imaging, or communications systems.

How much salary should I expect?

Freshers in Computer Engineering may fetch average salary of about Rs. 2,46,360/- per annum. Once you are into this industry, career growth entirely depends on your knowledge, skills and communication skills. After joining the industry, within a period of six years, most of the people may fetch salary of about Rs. 9,00,000/- per annum. (Source: Payscale.com)

Entrance Exams

From last three years, most of the institutes in India have subscribed to Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Apart from IITs and NITs, engineering colleges in the States of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Odisha have joined JEE (Main) system.

In order to perform well in this exam, start your preparation early.
